BPH Q & A

What is BPH?

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is an enlarged prostate gland. It’s a common men’s health problem, as the prostate gland can continue to grow in men throughout their lifetime.

A large prostate gland can lead to uncomfortable symptoms and urinary tract, kidney, and bladder problems. BPH isn’t cancer but can occur at the same time as prostate cancer. Screening and treatment help reduce your symptoms and prevent complications.

What are the symptoms of BPH?

Some common signs and symptoms of BPH to watch out for include:

  • Problems urinating
  • A frequent or urgent need to urinate
  • Increases in urination at night
  • A weak urine stream
  • Urination that stops and starts
  • Leaking urine after you urinate
  • Difficulty completely emptying your bladder
  • Blood in the urine

Other conditions that cause similar symptoms include urinary tract infections (UTIs), prostate inflammation, urethral stricture, previous bladder surgery, kidney or bladder stones, nerve problems, and bladder or prostate cancer.

Your symptoms might stabilize or improve over time on their own. But if not or symptoms are severe, see the Huntington Urology Specialists team for an evaluation.

What are the risk factors for BPH?

While any man can develop BPH and its symptoms, the following factors increase your risk of experiencing it:

  • Older age
  • Family history of BPH
  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Inactivity

In addition to urinary problems associated with untreated BPH, additional complications might include urinary retention, bladder damage, and kidney damage. These health problems can become serious, which is why medical intervention is important.

How is BPH diagnosed?

To diagnose BPH or other men’s health problems, your urologist reviews your symptoms and medical history. They complete a physical examination, including a digital rectal exam to check for prostate enlargement. Your provider might recommend that you complete diagnostic tests too.

Examples include urinary flow tests, other urine tests, bladder pressure tests, prostate biopsy, ultrasound, or cystoscopy, a procedure in which your urologist uses a thin, lighted tube with a tiny camera to view the inside of your bladder and urethra.

How is BPH treated?

Your provider personalizes each BPH treatment based on your age, overall health, symptoms, and size of your prostate gland. They might recommend:

  • Watchful waiting
  • Diet and exercise changes
  • Weight loss
  • Medications
  • Minimally invasive surgery
  •  Urolift
  • Laser therapy
  • Robotic simple prostatectomy

The urology team at Huntington Urology Specialists uses the latest advancements in BPH treatments and surgical procedures, including robotic surgery and other minimally invasive techniques such as the Urolift
